Summary

The CDOT Travel Modeling Internship is part-time (15-20 hours per week) and temporary residing in the Regional Travel Modeling and Analysis Section of the Charlotte Department of Transportation’s Planning and Design Division. This position provides a hands-on opportunity to learn about travel modeling and the role it plays in the planning process.

The Regional Travel Modeling and Analysis Section is responsible for maintaining and enhancing the Metrolina Regional Travel Demand Model (MRM) on behalf of the region’s four MPOs, two rural planning organizations and the NCDOT and SCDOT. In addition, staff conducts and reviews detailed forecasts and analyses of transportation demand and performance for both the City and the Charlotte Regional Transportation Planning Organization (CRTPO) using travel demand modeling, meso- and micro-simulation, GIS and passive data.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Learn about relationship between travel demand modeling & federally required long-range planning process
  • Work with cross-departmental / cross-jurisdictional teams / committees 
  • Learn about & assist with updates to TransCAD based Metrolina Regional Travel Demand Model 
  • Learn about & assist with reviewing / producing travel forecasts / traffic analyses / impact studies using: 
  • TransCAD 
  •  TransModeler 
  •  Synchro 
  •  SIDRA
  • CORSIM 
  • Learn about & assist with analyzing travel time trends / congestion using Regional Integrated Transportation Information System (RITIS) 
  • Learn about & assist with developing / applying system modeling / analysis tools using: 
  • TransCAD 
  • Tableau 
  • ArcGIS

Minimum Qualifications

  • Current enrollment in an accredited college or university leading towards a Bachelor's degree with major course work in a related field of study specific to the departmental and/or work assignment.
  • An equivalent combination of education and relevant experience that provides the necessary knowledge, skills, an abilities to successfully perform the essential job duties

Salary

  • $15.00 - $17.00 / Hour; Commensurate with experience

Conditions of Employment

The City’s Background Check Policy requires background checks to be conducted on final internal or external candidate(s) applying for any position with the City of Charlotte. The type of information that will be collected as part of a background check includes, but is not limited to: reference checks, social security verification, education verification, criminal conviction record check, and, if applicable, a credit history check, sex offender registry and motor vehicle records check.

Final candidates must pass a pre-employment drug-screening test and physical examination. During the selection process, candidates may be asked to take a skills test, and/or participate in other assessments.
