Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide project support for the Urban Design Center
  • Produce project work, such as creating maps, renderings, drawings, and graphics
  • Write and design planning reports; assist with developing Corridors of Opportunity playbooks 
  • Participate in and prepare community engagement meetings and experiences for most projects
  • Assist with placemaking projects from design through construction 
  • Assist the Historic Districts with special projects as needed 
  • Provide design guidance for City Capital Projects 
  • Work with Planning Design and Development and other departments on major initiatives involving urban design (e.g., corridors of opportunities, CATS Silver Line, strategic mobility plan, Charlotte Future 2040 implementation, etc.)

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Demonstrated knowledge of urban design principles, practices, and their applicability to the community
  • Ability to write about planning and urban design principles and explain those principles graphically
  • Experience working with teams on design and/or planning projects 
  • Comfort with presenting and working with diverse audiences and all segments of the city’s population.
  • Proficient skills in all Adobe Suite products, ArcGIS, and SketchUp, as well as Microsoft Word. 

Preferred Qualification

  • Master’s degree in Planning, Architecture, Geography, Landscape Architecture, Engineering, Political Science, Public Administration, Social Science or related field 
  • AICP or other planning-related professional certifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Four-Year degree in Planning, Architecture, Geography, Landscape Architecture, Engineering, Political Science, Public Administration, Social Science or related field 
  • One (1) or more years of urban design experience in multiple areas of practice (notably urban design, public space planning, placemaking, policy planning and implementation) 
  • An equivalent combination of education and relevant experience that provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the essential job functions


Conditions of Employment

The City’s Background Check Policy requires background checks to be conducted on final internal or external candidate(s) applying for any position with the City of Charlotte. The type of information that will be collected as part of a background check includes, but is not limited to: reference checks, social security verification, education verification, criminal conviction record check, and, if applicable, a credit history check, sex offender registry and motor vehicle records check.

Background checks must be in compliance with all federal and state statutes, such as the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA). The checks must be consistent with the guidelines set forth by these laws requiring organizations to obtain a candidate’s written authorization before obtaining a criminal background report, motor vehicle records check or credit report; and to properly store and dispose of information derived from such reports.

Final candidates must pass a pre-employment drug-screening test and physical examination. During the selection process, candidates may be asked to take a skills test, and/or participate in other assessments.
