Summary

Perform work under the direct supervision of skilled and semi-skilled workers at Charlotte Douglas International Airport. The Apprentice would be trained to install, repair and perform preventive maintenance of heating, ventilation, air conditioning and related systems at Charlotte Douglas International Airport.  Perform other general maintenance work repairs and preventive maintenance to plumbing and electrical equipment incidental to above duties, or necessary to keep buildings in working order.

In addition, Plumbing Apprentice will be required to attend Central Piedmont Community College (CPCC) and earn and Associates of Applied Science in Air Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Technology.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Install, repair and perform preventive maintenance of HVAC systems.
  • Perform semi-skilled to skilled repairs and preventive maintenance to plumbing and electrical equipment.
  • General building maintenance work, including manual labor to keep buildings in working order.
  • Compile lists of equipment, tools and supplies needed.
  • Operate cars, vans, lifts, bucket trucks and other heavy equipment.
  • Subject to emergency call back for equipment repairs and inclement weather.
  • Complete all associated paperwork.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

· Read and write sufficiently to complete related paperwork and read schematic designs and blueprints.

· Represent the airport in a professional manner and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, traveling public and tenants

· All other duties associated with achieving the requisite skills needed for an HVAC Technician

· Follow oral and written instructions


General Information:

  • Valid driver’s license with no more than 6 points and ability to qualify for City driving permit.
  • Certain convictions will disqualify individuals from unescorted access privileges and therefore exclude from employment.
  • Subject to 24-hour emergency call back to work. 
  • Must be available for work for a rotating weekend and holiday duty schedule.
  • Shift subject to change.
  • Must be able to meet admission requirements associated with college level related courses associated with apprenticeship programs.

Physical Requirements:

Must be able to spend about 90% of time standing, bending, reaching, walking and driving. The rest of the time includes a combination of sitting, twisting, kneeling, squatting, crawling, climbing, lifting, shoveling and carrying.  Typically, would not lift or carry more than 50 lbs., however, occasional lifts up to approximately 120 lbs. particularly when handling compressors.

Minimum Qualifications

· High School graduate/GED preferred.

· Candidate must maintain successful enrollment per educational requirements at Central Piedmont Community College (CPCC). 

Conditions of Employment

The City’s Background Check Policy requires background checks to be conducted on final internal or external candidate(s) applying for any position with the City of Charlotte. The type of information that will be collected as part of a background check includes, but is not limited to: reference checks, social security verification, education verification, criminal conviction record check, and, if applicable, a credit history check, sex offender registry and motor vehicle records check.

The checks must be consistent with the guidelines set forth by these laws requiring organizations to obtain a candidate’s written authorization before obtaining a criminal background report, motor vehicle records check or credit report; and to properly store and dispose of information derived from such reports.

Final candidates must pass a pre-employment drug-screening test and physical examination. During the selection process, candidates may be asked to take a skills test, and/or participate in other assessments.
