The Maintenance Machinist Technicians perform preventive and corrective maintenance on Siemens Vehicles. Maintenance services are provided seven days a week, twenty-four hours a day, during the day, evening, and night shifts. Rail Car Maintenance operates at two shop locations. It is necessary to complete the RCM Technician training successfully.

Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and fabricate from blueprints various components made of aluminum, mild steel, or stainless-steel using stick, MIG or TIG welding techniques.  Rebuild gearboxes, fans, and other rotating equipment with no supervision.  Machine OD & ID cut threads and mill keyways using lathes and mills.

• Calculate dimensions and tolerances using knowledge of mathematics and instruments such as micrometers and Vernier calipers.
• Machine parts to specifications using machine tools such as lathes, milling machines, shapers, or grinders.
• Measure, examine, and test completed units to detect defects and ensure conformance to specifications, using precision instruments such as micrometers.
• Set up, adjust, and operate all the basic machine tools and many specialized or advanced variation tools to perform precision machining operations.
• Align and secure holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials onto machines.
• Select the appropriate tools, machines, and materials to be used in preparation of machinery work.
• Lay out, measure, and mark metal stock to display placement of cuts.
• Observe and listen to operating machines or equipment to diagnose machine malfunctions and to determine need for adjustments or repairs.
• Maintain industrial machines, applying knowledge of mechanics, shop mathematics, metal properties, layout, and machining procedures.
• Knowledge of the tools, equipment, materials, methods, and standard practices of the machinist's trade.
• Knowledge of the maintenance and repair of machine shop tools and equipment. 

After training, personnel will perform recommended preventative and corrective maintenance on rail transit vehicles. 

Special Pay

• This position is eligible for participation in CATS RCM Mandatory OT Inspection Program, requiring mandatory Overtime (max of 60 hours per week) and inclusive of:
• Overtime pay at Time and a Half for any work performed exceeding 40 hours in the pay period.
• $1,500 monthly retention bonus, and annual lump sum incentive*
• Position offers Shift Differential Premium (2.5%) increase to base compensation with placement on any 2^nd or 3^rd shift placement.
• Position is also eligible to receive CDL Premium (2.5%) increase to base compensation for active CDL holders.

• Performs maintenance as outlined by the Rail Operations Maintenance.
• Must maintain the standard tools of the trade, and the department will provide all specialty tools.
• Maintains, and repairs all systems related to rail vehicle systems such as propulsion, braking, HVAC, automatic train protection, doors, auxiliary power, power collection, hydraulics, trucks, car body.
• Performs maintenance on emergency support equipment using all the necessary tools and equipment to accomplish tasks.
• Responds to Rail system emergencies that involve significant service delays and serious vehicle accidents. Provides whatever remedial action is needed to retrieve rail vehicles back to the yard and restore service.
• Complies with all safety regulations by CATS, OSHA, APTA, FTA, FRA, and NCDOT.
• As part of your responsibility to support the CATS Safety Culture, report safety concerns and issues through the various methods established by CATS as outlined in the ASP.

• Candidates must pass a written exam to demonstrate knowledge.
• Candidates must pass an oral test and interview to be considered for employment.
• Ability to perform maintenance, and repair of electronic, electrical, electro-mechanical, and mechanical systems.
• Must be able to read, follow, and utilize electrical, schematics, electronic, mechanical, and work instructions.
• Follow oral and written instructions with minimal supervision.
• Safely operate a variety of standard and specialized hand tools and shop power equipment.
• PC skills, including all Microsoft Office programs.
• Must have a valid driver's license and the ability to attain a North Carolina driver's license within the timelines outlined by CATS and the City of Charlotte, NC, the USA, at the start of employment. NOTE: See Special Provisions.

High school diploma or GED; one years of experience in the trade which may include an apprenticeship and/or applicable vocational training and should include some experience as a journeyman machinist; or an AA degree in Mechanical, Industrial, or successful completion of apprenticeship program.

Education:

The applicant must minimally have a high school diploma or GED: supplemented by a certificate/degree in the following fields:

Mechanical

Machinist

Military Training

Also acceptable is proof of completion of electrical/mechanical/electronics training from the Armed Forces. Minimum one year of experience repairing electrical, electronic, or any equivalent combination of training and experience. Experience in industrial maintenance or completed a millwright apprenticeship or a trade degree in related work.

Experience:

Candidate is required to one years of experience repairing electrical, electronic, and/or electro-mechanical systems or equivalent training.

The City’s Background Check Policy requires background checks to be conducted on final internal or external candidate(s) applying for any position with the City of Charlotte.
