Perform work under the direct supervision of skilled and semi-skilled workers at Charlotte Douglas International Airport. The Aviation Heavy Equipment Service Technician Apprentice shall be trained and perform skilled maintenance and repair work on tractors, fire apparatus, heavy construction equipment, generators, and Electric Vehicles including but not limited to Buses and light duty vehicles, and other standard/special automotive equipment operated by the Aviation Department. This position will perform work under the guidance and general direction of the apprenticeship mentor and supervisor.
In addition, the Aviation Heavy Equipment Service Technician Apprentice will be required to attend Central Piedmont Community College (CPCC) and earn an Associate of Applied Science in Diesel and Heavy Equipment Technology. This is in addition to performing on-the-job semi-skilled tasks in mechanical maintenance.

Physical Requirements:
This is a physically active job requiring manual dexterity, physical strength, and the ability to lift 50 lbs. without assistance, and the ability to manipulate heavier weights up to 100 lbs. with assistance. Physical activity may include stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motions. Exposure to noise, heat, dust, cold, fumes, uneven surfaces, chemical substances likely, and adverse weather conditions.

The City’s Background Check Policy requires background checks to be conducted on final internal or external candidate(s) applying for any position with the City of Charlotte. The type of information that will be collected as part of a background check includes, but is not limited to: reference checks, social security verification, education verification, criminal conviction record check, and, if applicable, a credit history check, sex offender registry and motor vehicle records check.

Final candidates must pass a pre-employment drug-screening test and physical examination. During the selection process, candidates may be asked to take a skills test, and/or participate in other assessments.
