Introduction

The City of Charlotte Finance Department is seeking a Financial Reporting Accounting Technician to work in the Control section of the Financial Reporting Division.  This position serves as a member of the Financial Reporting team which consists of a Chief Accountant, Assistant Chief Accountant, Accountants, a Budget & Finance Analyst, and an Accounting Technician.

This position will perform daily activities which include verifying the integrity of the financial system through daily balancing of the general ledger and the third-party systems. This position will also audit the invoices that are processed in accounts payable and perform other duties as needed. 

The selected candidate will work with the Control section supervisor and an accountant. This position reports to the Financial Reporting Accountant III.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Balance the general ledger and data warehouse - daily
  • Balance several third-party systems - daily
  • Reconcile and balance journal entries generated from the third-party systems - daily
  • Perform the check process and print, mail and distribute accounts payable checks – Two times per week
  • Audit invoices to verify accuracy of information and various imports - daily
  • Print, mail and distribute payroll checks – weekly
  • Maintain various tracking logs of activities performed
  • Generate and review reports in Bank of America’s Works program – monthly
  • Prepare investment reconciliations- monthly
  • Generate and review cash disbursements journal imports 
  • Confirm wire payments during the audit
  • Prepare stop payments
  • Prepare letters for outstanding payroll checks
  • Process paperwork necessary to re-issue payroll check

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Proficient with personal computers including spreadsheet and database applications
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

Preferred Qualification

An associate degree in accounting or business-related field of study, with at least two years of work experience  

Minimum Qualifications

High school graduate or equivalent and five years relevant experience.

Or

Associate’s Degree and three years relevant experience.

Conditions of Employment

The City’s Background Check Policy requires background checks to be conducted on final internal or external candidate(s) applying for any position with the City of Charlotte. Final candidates must pass a pre-employment drug-screening test and physical examination. During the selection process, candidates may be asked to take a skills test, and/or participate in other assessments.
