Introduction

CFD HR Intern will gain HR experience and exposure to various functional areas of Human Resources. You will rotate between a few areas of Human Resources and Recruitment assisting with projects in Talent Acquisition, Employee Engagement, HR compliance and Benefits. The Internship Program provides exposure to CFD senior leaders, professional development, structured assignments, and social events.  Interns will gain knowledge and work experience in public safety and Human Resources.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

The selected student intern will work within the Human Resources team on a wide variety of projects and assignments, including but not limited to:

· Recruiting: Assist other members of the HR team in recruiting top talent to fill job vacancies.

· Publish vacancies to the recruiting module in the HRIS system.

· Conduct phone screening of short-listed candidates and schedule interviews with hiring managers as needed.

· Assist the HR Generalist in onboarding activities for Entry Level Fire Fighters.

· File Maintenance and clerical duties.

· Event Planning & Employee Engagement.

· Connect with subject matter experts, mentors and decision makers.

· Create and post internal company announcements.

· Partner with Workforce Development to assist with Career/Job Fairs.   

 

Diversity and Inclusion Initiatives:

· Research ways the company can utilize our Employee Resource Groups and other tools/activities to create a more inclusive environment.

Onboarding Assistance:

· Assist in preparing, organizing, and completion of new hire paperwork and tasks.

· Collaborate with other City departments to ensure a timely completion of all necessary paperwork and tasks.

· Update checklists and create user-friendly formats.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

ADA and Other Requirements:

Positions in this class typically require: grasping, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motions.

 Physical Requirements:

  • Essential and marginal functions may require maintaining physical conditions necessary for sitting, standing, climbing, or walking for extended periods of time.
  • Light to moderate lifting and carrying; some crouching, stooping, squatting, crawling, reaching, pushing, and pulling when performing tasks.
  • Adequate vision, hearing, and speech required.

Sensory Requirements:

  • Concentrated and attentive use of one or more senses (visual, audio, and other sensory modalities) for proofreading, data entry, and tabulating data.
  • Ability to operate in an environment with frequent interruptions from people and/or noises, which in return could result in some level of stress, fatigue, or strain.
  • Comprehensive written information in work-related documents.
  • Ability to hear, understand, and distinguish speech.

Working Conditions:

Work is performed in an indoor office environment with moderate exposure to atmospheric conditions; moderate exposure to environmental conditions (such as officers, community members, victims, etc.); and frequent exposure to computer screens, files, and phone.

Minimum Qualifications

Current enrollment in an accredited college or university leading towards a Bachelor's degree with major course work in a related field of study specific to the departmental and/or work assignment.

· Applicants majoring in Human Resource or Business Administration with concentration in HR.  

· You must be a current junior, senior or graduate student in good academic standing

· Majoring in an area of study related to the position.

· Possess strong written & verbal communication skills.

· High attention to detail and excellent organizational skills.

· Have a strong understanding of Microsoft 365 Suite, including Outlook, and Excel.

· Demonstrate leadership qualities.

Conditions of Employment

The City’s Background Check Policy requires background checks to be conducted on final internal or external candidate(s) applying for any position with the City of Charlotte. The type of information that will be collected as part of a background check includes, but is not limited to: reference checks, social security verification, education verification, criminal conviction record check, and, if applicable, a credit history check, sex offender registry and motor vehicle records check.

Final candidates must pass a pre-employment drug-screening test and physical examination. During the selection process, candidates may be asked to take a skills test, and/or participate in other assessments.
