Summary

This position will be responsible for the inspection, maintenance, and repair of valves and air vacuum valves located in the distribution system on the large mains and raw water lines. These include, but are not limited to air vacuum valves, cone valves, butterfly valves, gate vavles, and blow off valves installed on line sizes ranging from 24 to 120 inch. This position also will perform maintenance of mechanical equipment associated with the operation of water treatment plants, remote water storage, and pumping sites. Work involves repairing, rebuilding and/or performing preventative maintenance on various types of pumps, valves, pipes, compressors, boilers, conveyors, etc.; maintaining buildings and grounds; cleaning up work sites and tools; and servicing equipment.

Duties for this position include completing both preventative and corrective maintenance on valves and equipment. This maintenance ensures the operational readiness of the distribution system, pump stations and treatment plants. This position will assist with condition assessment, meeting regulatory requirements and will respond to emergencies as needed. Will also complete documentation associated with preventative and corrective maintenance. Understanding types of valves and the way they seal is necessary. Will work on valves and install valves in existing vaults and facilities. Must be competent with general safety practices, use of personal protective equipment and performing confined space entry. Strong communication skills and a good work ethic are required.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

• Maintains and repairs valves in the distribution system and mechanical equipment associated with the operation of water treatment plants, raw water pump stations, remote distribution pump stations.
• Preforms preventive maintenance on all equipment by visually checking equipment for signs of improper operation; checking oil levels; and looking for vibrations, noise, and leaks; and takes appropriate action.
• Performs scheduled equipment maintenance; lubricates chains and sprockets; services air valves; pulls inspection covers; replaces v-belts; and checks sumps.
• Operates pumps, motors, and emergency generators.
• Conducts monthly inspections on vehicles, power tools, folk lifts, crane truck, stationary cranes, and safely retrieval systems.
• Maintains records of preventative/predictive/reactive maintenance in City works.
• Maintains related records including hours worked; chemicals and materials used.
• Assists with the rebuilding, repairing, or replacing equipment by working with other mechanics to troubleshoot equipment; gathers proper tools and parts.
• Performs other building maintenance (such as replacing lights, broken windows) and grounds maintenance (such as weed spraying and taking out trash).
• Must respond to after-hours alarms and subject to emergency call back as required.
• Work in confined spaces up to 40’ below ground including wet wells and vaults.
• Follows related safety regulations.
• Performs other related job duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• Knowledge of computerized maintenance management software.
• Knowledge of operating and repairing related equipment.
• Knowledge of municipal water/water treatment
• Skill in working with mechanical, welding, and plumbing tools.
• Ability to obtain a city driving permit.
• Ability to follow safety regulations

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
The work is heavy work and requires applying up to 20 pounds of force constantly; applying 30 pounds of force frequently; and exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally to move objects. Additionally, the following physical abilities are required: climbing, grasping, handling, distinguishing among sounds, kneeling, reaching, repetitive motion, speaking, standing, visual acuity in color, observations/equipment, and walking.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Work is performed in an environment with heavy equipment and machinery that could result in bodily harm to co-workers or others. Requires working in confined spaces and working on elevated areas. Subject to varying and adverse weather conditions.

Preferred Qualification

Having one of the following certifications is preferred:
• NC Grade I Maintenance Technologist Certification
• NC Grade 2 Maintenance Technologist Certification
• NC Grade 3 Maintenance Technologist Certification
• NC Grade 4 Maintenance Technologist Certification

Minimum Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent

• Two (2) years of related maintenance work experience

LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS OR REGISTRATIONS:

• Requires valid driver’s license.

• NC One Water Maintenance Technologist I Certification required within 30 months

Salary

Compensation to commensurate with level of certification, qualifications and experience.
• NC Grade I Maintenance Technologist Certification - $47,942
• NC Grade 2 Maintenance Technologist Certification - $52,857
• NC Grade 3 Maintenance Technologist Certification - $58,275
• NC Grade 4 Maintenance Technologist Certification - $64,248

Conditions of Employment

The City’s Background Check Policy requires background checks to be conducted on final internal or external candidate(s) applying for any position with the City of Charlotte.
