Summary

The Senior Travel Demand Modeler serves as a technical leader in the development, enhancement, and programming of the regional travel demand model as well as subarea models for high growth and congestion areas. Conducts and manages detailed analyses of transportation demand and performance in a team setting using transportation modeling, air quality modeling, and geographic information systems software and databases. Monitors, trains, and mentors junior modeling staff.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Serve as a senior technical advisor on the regional model maintenance and development team. 
  • Serve as senior technical support for the development of sub-area models for areas of high growth using both TransCAD and TransModeler. 
  • Conduct research and analysis necessary to maintain a state-of-the-practice regional model and to develop / apply supplementary forecasting tools. 
  • Develop and edit macros and computer programs (GISDK or other languages such as R, C++, Python, or SQL) for the regional travel demand model. Design and write model updates and enhancements. 
  • Perform and review travel forecasting activities for transit and highway projects, air-quality analysis, and regional planning. 
  • Work with appropriate committees to foresee, prevent or resolve problems pertaining to the development or application of the regional transportation model.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • TransCAD (preferred) or CUBE 
  • Thorough knowledge of theory, principles and practices of urban and transportation planning, including the ability to develop transportation models, prepare travel demand projections and provide technical modeling support. 
  • Advanced knowledge of the principles and practices of travel demand forecasting and their relationship to regional air quality issues/conformity. 
  • Ability to manage complex projects, maintain schedules, and communicate complex, technical work to a non-technical audience. 
  • Ability to systematically solve problems individually and collaboratively.

Preferred Qualification

  • Professional Engineer or American Institute of Certified Planners designation is desirable.
  • Bachelor's Degree in civil engineering, transportation or urban planning, or related field and five (5) years of relevant work experience
  • or Master's Degree with three (3) year of relevant work experience
  • An equivalent combination of education and relevant experience that provides the necessary knowledge, skills an abilities to successfully perform the essential job duties

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree and three years of relevant work experience

OR

Master's Degree with one year of relevant work experience
