The City of Charlotte Community Relations Committee is
seeking a Community Relations Specialist who will be responsible for
administering a comprehensive Nondiscrimination Ordinance Program (NDO).
This position
is responsible for providing specialized community relations services to
individuals and groups, staff support for subcommittee activities of the
Community Relations Committee (CRC), maintaining contact with special interest
and community groups, identifying community needs and resources to meet those
needs, and resolution of resident’s complaints of inadequate services or unfair
treatment by public agencies and private businesses. Work is received based on
general assignments and performance is evaluated based on discussion, metrics,
and results. Work involves extensive engagement and interaction with
community members. Work requires the exercise of considerable independent
judgment and initiative.
•Advises
the community regarding anti-discrimination laws, ordinances, and regulations;
and
provides
training in processing complaints of discriminatory treatment
•Investigates
complaints of discrimination in public accommodations and employment practices;
complaints
of violations of the Non-Discrimination Ordinance; and participates in
conciliation and
public
hearings of such cases
•Receives,
investigates, and seeks resolution to complaints of inadequate services or
unfair/unlawful
discriminatory
treatment by public organizations and private businesses
•Identifies
social, economic, and community relations issues throughout
Charlotte-Mecklenburg;
seeks
to identify and apply available resources to the resolution of those issues, or
to develop such
resources
•Collects,
researches, and analyzes information relating to community problems and
projects; and
prepares
and presents reports to subcommittees and task forces
•Develops
and maintains contact and working relationships with community groups, special
interest
groups,
and human service agencies
•Prepares
and maintains records and periodic reports
•Performs
other related work as required
•Major
course work in social work, sociology, or a related field
•Knowledge
of federal and state laws and procedures relating to civil/human rights
•Thorough
knowledge of community needs and human service resources
•Knowledge
of individual and group behavior and of effective ways of working with people
•Ability
to analyze, investigate and conciliate individual or group complaints of
discrimination and

Graduation from a four-year college or university with major course work in social work, sociology, or a related field, preferably supplemented by graduate level course work in one of these fields or any equivalent combination of experience and training in the knowledge, skills and abilities required.
The City’s Background Check Policy requires background checks to be conducted on final internal or external candidate(s) applying for any position with the City of Charlotte. Final candidates must pass a pre-employment drug-screening test and physical examination. During the selection process, candidates may be asked to take a skills test, and/or participate in other assessments.
