Summary

This position directly supervises a Sign Installation crew for all job functions. This position is responsible for installing and maintaining all ground-mounted traffic-related and specialty signage for the City of Charlotte. This position operates in a fast-paced team environment. This position works primarily in the Sign Installation Section; however, the position may also involve work in other sections or on specialized projects as needed.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform direct daily supervision of sign crew activities, including training, coaching, documenting, and providing performance reviews.
  • Perform routine maintenance on sign equipment and assets.
  • Complete an accurate daily record within the Cityworks system to document labor, equipment, and materials.
  • Interpret work orders, prints, and other related documents to complete work accurately.
  • Responsible for the installation and maintenance of Traffic Control signs.
  • Operate and maintain assets including but not limited to vehicles, specialized equipment, tools, and materials.
  • Set up temporary work zones and perform work in medians.
  • Follow oral and written instructions.
  • Work in a team environment.
  • Work in all weather conditions.
  • Perform related work as required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Valid driver's license with the ability to obtain and maintain a City of Charlotte Driving Permit
  • Safety – Knowledge of OSHA, city, and federal rules and regulations, as well as work hazards and applicable safety precautions for the assigned work.
  • Ability to read and write.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions
  • Ability to communicate effectively within a diverse workforce environment
  • Ability to troubleshoot and solve problems related to the installation and maintenance of traffic signs with limited supervision from Field Operations Supervisor or Labor Crew Chief II  
  • Ability to perform heavy manual labor for extended periods in all weather conditions.
  • Ability to use specialized equipment, power, and hand tools for traffic operations  
  • Ability to work as a team and lead crew members on various tasks and projects
  • Ability to read and interpret prints provided by traffic engineers
  • Knowledge of methods, materials, tools, and standard practices for installing, operating, and maintaining traffic signs and supporting systems.
  • Knowledge of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control (MUTCD) for traffic signs 
  • Knowledge of hazards and safety precautions involved with working in and around heavy vehicle traffic
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office products and Cityworks system

Reporting Relationship: Reports to the Labor Crew Chief II and Field Operations Supervisor.

General Information:
  • Work shall require shifts or irregular hours determined at the supervisor's discretion.
  • Outdoor environment - working in various weather conditions and unconditioned warehouse facilities will be required as needed.

Preferred Qualification

  • Experience with work hazards, safety precautions, and OSHA regulations preferred.
  • Computer experience is preferred, including desktop computer or tablet. Examples of preferred computer experience include but are not limited to Cityworks, data entry, spreadsheets, and Word documents.

Minimum Qualifications

High School Graduate or Equivalent and three years relevant work experience

Conditions of Employment
