Summary

The CDOT Mason is responsible for the construction and maintenance of concrete curb and gutter, sidewalks, driveways, and brick structures within the right of way.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Construct and maintain concrete curb and gutter, sidewalks, driveways, and brick structures 
  • Mix the mortar and set up forms and related construction equipment 
  • Set the forms that hold concrete to the desired pitch and depth, and align them. 
  • Check the forms that hold the concrete to see that they are properly constructed. 
  • Spread, level, and smooth concrete, using rake, shovel, hand or power trowel, hand or power screed, and float. 
  • Monitor how the wind, heat, or cold affect the curing of the concrete throughout the entire process. 
  • Direct the casting of the concrete and supervise laborers who use shovels or special tools to spread it. 
  • Produce rough concrete surface, using broom. 
  • Mold expansion joints and edges, using edging tools, jointers, and straightedge. 
  • Clean chipped area, using wire brush, and feel and observe surface to determine if it is rough or uneven. 
  • Clean and maintain tools used to accomplish major duties. 
  • Signal truck driver to position truck to facilitate pouring concrete, and move chute to direct concrete on forms. 
  • Apply hardening and sealing compounds to cure surface of concrete, and waterproof or restore surface. 
  • Read written plans and service requests directions when necessary to complete a construction job. 
  • Understand the water flow line in order to maintain proper construction structure.

TOOLS, EQUIPMENT, AND MACHINES: Rake, shovel, concrete tools, brick laying tools.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: Extreme Temperatures possible, outdoors; Some physical activity and time spent in heavy machinery

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Building and Construction- Knowledge of materials, methods, and the tools involved in the construction or repair of houses, buildings, or other structures such as highways and roads. 
  • Administration and Management- Knowledge of business and management principles involved in strategic planning, resource allocation, human resources modeling, leadership 
  • Mathematics- Knowledge of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, calculus, statistics, and their applications.
  • Customer and Personal Service- Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services. 
  • Public Safety and Security- Knowledge of OSHA, City, and Federal rules and regulations, as well as work 
  • Monitoring- Monitoring/Assessing performance of yourself, other individuals, or organizations to make improvements or take corrective action. 
  • Active Listening- Giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times. 
  • Time Management- Managing one's own time and the time of others. 
  • Communication Skills – Conveying information effectively through speaking and writing and understanding information others give through speaking and writing. 
  • Teamwork skills – Works well with others to accomplish a common goal. 
  • Physical Abilities include but are not limited to: sitting, standing, bending, twisting, reaching, kneeling/squatting, walking, driving, crawling, climbing, lifting and carrying (up to 90lbs), shoveling, pushing, and pulling.

Minimum Qualifications

One year related work experience

OR

High School Graduate or Equivalent and one year related work experience

Conditions of Employment

The City’s Background Check Policy requires background checks to be conducted on final internal or external candidate(s) applying for any position with the City of Charlotte. The type of information that will be collected as part of a background check includes, but is not limited to: reference checks, social security verification, education verification, criminal conviction record check, and, if applicable, a credit history check, sex offender registry and motor vehicle records check.
