Summary

This position manages, directs, and plans mechanical maintenance activities at assigned wastewater treatment plants and associated assigned sites. Work involves establishing the overall maintenance philosophy; working with wastewater treatment plant supervisors and staff to review maintenance priorities and develop an overall plan to
improve reliability and redundancy of equipment; coordinating maintenance needs with engineers and consultants to develop a capital improvement project list; resolving equipment issues; and participating in plant upgrades. This position also prepares the maintenance budget for the assigned locations; manages assigned supervisors; assists maintenance supervisors with resolution of long-term and/or complex issues; and performs administrative duties such as necessary.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Manages the assigned maintenance supervisors; discusses and resolve maintenance issues; identifies performance expectations; reviews work in progress as well as completed work; assists supervisors in determining priorities; coordinates activities with operations management and staff; and ensures that maintenance activities are performed efficiently and effectively.
  • Manages internal staff and contractors that install, troubleshoot, and maintain mechanical equipment at wastewater treatment facilities.
  • Manages the procurement process for maintenance by working with procurement to identify long-term contract needs; develops specifications that meet the plant’s needs; evaluates new products; and works with supervisors to assist them with procuring supplies and materials.
  • Plans and manages the budget for the assigned areas.
  • Participates in plant upgrades/expansions by working with others to develop a capital improvement project list; justifies maintenance project needs; works to meet competing funding issues among plants; contributes to design discussions; reviews submittals; and works with contractors and consultants during construction to
  • Ensure upgrades/expansions are easily maintainable.
  • Coordinates maintenance activities with others; reviews maintenance activities on a regular basis; discusses on-going maintenance issues that potentially affect the plant’s ability to meet permit regulations; and develops an overall maintenance plan to better meet the plant’s needs.
  • Provides leadership and direction to assigned supervisors on personnel issues, procurement problems, budget issues, and other administrative challenges.
  • Supervises and coordinates work activities of assigned staff; assigns work, monitors status of work, and inspects completed work; participates and provides input in staffing decisions relative to hiring, firing, discipline, and promotional opportunities; evaluates performance; mentors staff; and aids with career development.
  • Performs other related job duties as assigned.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
The work is medium work and requires applying 30 pounds of force frequently and exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally to move objects. Additionally, the following physical abilities are required: balancing, climbing, feeling, manual dexterity, grasping, handling, perceiving sounds at normal speaking levels, distinguishing among sounds, lifting, mental acuity, pulling, reaching, repetitive motion, speaking, standing, expressing ideas by spoken word, shouting above noises, visual acuity in data/color/observations/equipment/inspections, and walking.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Work is performed in an environment with heavy equipment and machinery that could result in bodily harm to co-workers or others. 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Associate degree in mechanical engineering, civil engineering, millwright, or a related field from an accredited school.
  • Seven (7) years of related work experience including one (1) year of supervisory experience.
  • OR an equivalent combination of education and relevant work/industry/military/job specific experience that provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the essential job duties
Licenses, Certifications or Registrations:
  • Requires a valid driver’s license.
  • Desires a NC AWWA-WEA Grade III Maintenance Technologist Certification or equivalent.

$86,976.00 - $96,640.00 Commensurate with Experience
