The Police
Aircraft Mechanic position is responsible for diagnosing, adjusting, repairing,
or overhauling aircraft engines and assemblies such as hydraulic and pneumatic
systems. This includes helicopter and aircraft engine specialists.

This includes helicopter and aircraft engine specialists. An Aircraft Mechanic assigned to the Aviation Unit for CMPD reports to the Police Sergeant. This role involves following established maintenance schedules, adhering to shop and field maintenance limitations, and complying with Federal Aviation Regulations. The position requires a high level of initiative and independent judgment for inspecting and maintaining aircraft. The Aircraft Mechanic may accompany pilots during test flights to observe and document findings, perform necessary repairs and modifications based on these findings, and address any pilot concerns. The role may require on-call and weekend work and is classified as FLSA nonexempt.
· Examine and inspect aircraft components, such
as landing gear, hydraulic systems, and deicers, to identify cracks, breaks,
leaks, or other issues.
· Conduct routine and special inspections as
required by regulations.
· Inspect completed work to ensure maintenance
meets standards and that aircraft are ready for operation.
· Read and interpret maintenance manuals,
service bulletins, and other specifications to determine the feasibility and
method of repairing or replacing malfunctioning or damaged components.
· Maintain repair logs, documenting all
preventive and corrective aircraft maintenance.
· Modify aircraft structures, systems, or
components by following drawings, schematics, charts, engineering orders, and
technical publications.
· Maintain, repair, and rebuild aircraft
structures and functional components, such as wings, fuselage, rigging,
hydraulic units, oxygen systems, fuel systems, electrical systems, gaskets, and
seals.
· Replace or repair worn, defective, or damaged
components using hand tools, gauges, and testing equipment.
· Read and interpret pilots' descriptions of
problems to diagnose causes.
· Test the operation of engines and other
systems using test equipment such as ignition analyzers, compression checkers,
distributor timers, and ammeters.
· Inspect, clean, remove, disassemble, rebuild,
and repair all aircraft components, including the main rotor blades, main rotor
hub assembly, engine mounts, dampers, swash plate control systems, power plant
and engine compartment, transmission, horizontal stabilizer, tail rotor blades
and hub assemblies, tail rotor drive and control system, accessory drive
assemblies, body and landing gear, electrical systems and components, fuselage
components, flight controls, hydraulic and pivot systems, and clutch
assemblies.
· Repair and maintain police-specific mission
equipment and clean, adjust, and replace control cables.
· Perform other duties as assigned.

Federal
Aviation Administration Airframe and Power Plant Mechanic certification

Ability
to acquire FAA Inspector Certification

Five
(5) years of related experience
The City’s Background Check Policy requires background checks to be conducted on final internal or external candidate(s) applying for any position with the City of Charlotte. The type of information that will be collected as part of a background check includes, but is not limited to: reference checks, social security verification, education verification, criminal conviction record check, and, if applicable, a credit history check, sex offender registry and motor vehicle records check.

The checks must be consistent with the guidelines set forth by these laws requiring organizations to obtain a candidate’s written authorization before obtaining a criminal background report, motor vehicle records check or credit report; and to properly store and dispose of information derived from such reports.
Final candidates must pass a pre-employment drug-screening test and physical examination. During the selection process, candidates may be asked to take a skills test, and/or participate in other assessments.
