Summary

This position requires the advanced skills, including the application of specialized knowledge and training, to ensure the protection of citizen’s and property and the safe keeping of animals through the enforcement of state laws and local ordinances.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

•Responds to emergencies involving aggression incidents
•Conducts post aggression and chronic violation investigations 
•Prepares cases for issuance of Written Orders 
•Performs specialized assignments such as chemical immobilization 
•Organizes and conducts canvasses and sweeps of problem neighborhoods
•Conduct in depth cruelty investigations and prepares cases for prosecutions 
•Prepares and makes application for criminal summons and warrants 
•Provides direction to Animal Care & Control Officers in complex field situations
•Performs special patrol, investigative and other Animal Care & Control functions as required
•Work involves extensive public contact and situations of personal danger

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

•Complete training and receive certification in chemical immobilization
•Successful completion of an animal cruelty case study
•Cannot have any sustained Rule of Conduct violations within the past year that has resulted in suspension 
•Have a Performance Appraisal Rating of “Achieved” or above for the previous year
•Knowledge of the safe handling and general welfare of both small and large domestic and wild animals
•Knowledge or the ability to acquire knowledge within a reasonable period of time of pertinent laws, regulations, procedures and ordinances 
•Ability to receive and comprehend oral and written directions and prepare extensive reports
•Ability to receive and comprehend oral and written directions and prepare extensive reports
•Ability to deal with the public in a courteous, tactful and effective manner
•Ability to work different shifts
•Attend and complete all training/classes set forth in the training matrix for Animal Care & Control Officers and show proficiency in knowledge
•Demonstrate the ability to perform all the duties required of an Animal Care & Control Officer I position
•Perform in accordance with departmental rules and regulations
•Ability to act with minimal supervision
•Ability to problem solve in the solution of situations involving animals

Preferred Qualification

Two years of experience with CMPD's Animal Care & Control.

Minimum Qualifications

High School Graduate or Equivalent and three years related work experience

Conditions of Employment

The City’s Background Check Policy requires background checks to be conducted on final internal or external candidate(s) applying for any position with the City of Charlotte. The type of information that will be collected as part of a background check includes, but is not limited to: reference checks, social security verification, education verification, criminal conviction record check, and, if applicable, a credit history check, sex offender registry and motor vehicle records check.

Final candidates must pass a pre-employment drug-screening test and physical examination. During the selection process, candidates may be asked to take a skills test, and/or participate in other assessments.
