Summary
The Fleet Management Division is seeking a Master Emergency Vehicle Technician to join a team of highly skilled fire apparatus technicians. This position is specific to supporting the Charlotte Fire Department fleet, however, there will be times where this position will support other departments based on workload. This position will be responsible for the daily evaluation, inspection, diagnosis and repair of fire apparatus and equipment for the City of Charlotte Fleet Management Division. The EVT Master level technician performs advanced diagnosis and repair of complex electronically controlled diesel engines, modern electrical systems, air and braking systems, complex hydraulic systems, and additional complex systems specific to fire apparatus and support equipment. This position may require training of fellow technicians regarding new practices and technology, as well as, at times be required to oversee workflow efforts which require a demonstrated ability to lead a group of people. Charlotte Fire Department owns and operates a fleet of Spartan/Smeal front line apparatus with a full array of support equipment that will fall under the purview of this position. This position requires the ability to support an on-call schedule 24 hours a day, including holidays and weekends, for 7 consecutive days. The on-call schedule will require the technician to be on-call in a 4 week rotation.
Major Duties and Responsibilities
- Performs advanced diagnosis and repair of complex electronically controlled diesel engines, modern electrical systems, air and braking systems, complex hydraulic systems, and additional complex systems such as; fire pumps, line voltage systems, and aerial devices specific to fire apparatus and support equipment on Charlotte Fire Department equipment.
- Utilizes fleet maintenance software to accurately document work performed.
- Maintains a safe work environment in shop and in the field
- Support an on-call schedule 24 hours a day, including holidays and weekends, for 7 consecutive days in a 4-week rotation.
- Interpreting manuals, electrical diagrams, diagnostic software, and experience in translating findings to system documentation and repair types, as well as, estimating repair costs is essential.
- Understanding and following safety procedures is critical with the ability to assess potential safety hazards.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Ability to clearly communicate with a diverse group of technicians, vendors and staff
- Knowledge of the methods, tools, and materials used in maintaining and repairing fire apparatus, fire pumps, aerial devices, and class 8 diesel powered chassis
- Knowledge of Fleet Management Information Systems
- Works well without direct supervision
- Must be able to demonstrate advanced knowledge and application for all phases of repairing vehicles/equipment.
- Knowledge of the occupational hazards & safety precautions of the trade
- Ability to resolve customer complaints related to vehicle repairs and maintenance
- Follow oral & written instructions
- Ability to communicate effectively both orally & in writing
- Must possess a valid North Carolina driver's license with the ability to obtain a Class B CDL within 180 days of hire
- Must possess or have the ability to obtain a North Carolina State Inspectors license within 180 days of hire
- Ability to travel out of town for work/training on occasion
- Conflict management and resolution with staff, customers, and City vendors
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, vendors, and customers.
- Ability to obtain ASE Heavy Truck and EVT Master status within 18 months of hire.
Preferred Qualification
- Degree or certification from an accredited technical school / college / university /
- Manufacturer training certification recognized by ASE, or relevant ASE certifications
- Emergency Vehicle Technician Master Status
- At least three years of experience related to heavy truck and diesel engine repair
- At least two years of experience related to fire apparatus maintenance and repair
Minimum Qualifications
- High School diploma/GED with five (5) years of relevant work experience or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience that provides the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the essential job duties
Salary
- $28.28 - $35.35/hr Commensurate with experience
